Behind the B: How We Became a Certified B Corporation™
Behind the B: How We Became a Certified B Corporation™
14 months. Countless spreadsheets. One group of incredible grad students. And a whole lot of belief that business can do better.
We’re officially a Certified B Corporation™, and while we could just throw some confetti and call it a day, we thought it might be more fun (and honest) to pull back the curtain and share how we actually got here — and what it means for our team, our community, and our planet.
First off, what’s a B Corp?
In short: it’s a big deal.
B Corp Certification means that a business meets the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. It’s not a quick form or a paid sticker — it’s a full-on audit of how your company operates from top to bottom.
Companies have to earn a score of 80 or above on the B Impact Assessment, a rigorous review process run by the nonprofit B Lab. They dig into everything: your supply chain, your hiring practices, your environmental impact, your governance, and your community involvement.
We earned a score of 97.4, and we’re proud of every tenth of a point.

Wait — What’s a Public Benefit Corporation, then?
We’re glad you asked, because this part has been at our core since Day One, as written into our Articles of Incorporation.
A Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) is a legal status — it means our business is legally required to consider not just profit, but the impact of our decisions on people, communities, and the planet. It’s written into our DNA.
Whereas B Corp Certification is a third-party certification awarded by B Lab, PBC status is baked into our legal structure as a company. That means when big decisions are on the table, we’re not just allowed to prioritize doing good — we’re required to.
And we’ve gone one step further: we’ve defined specific benefits that guide our work, including:
- Contribute more to the planet and its people than it takes
-
Contribute to the well-being of the communities of Northwest Colorado
Being a PBC gives us the freedom — and the accountability — to stay true to our values no matter how big we grow.

So, how did we get there?
Like most things at Town Hall, we started with curiosity, optimism, and no idea how much work it would actually take.
We kicked off our journey in early 2024 with a shared goal: to prove that our values — sustainability, transparency, community — weren’t just talk. We wanted to build a company that kids and parents could be proud of, inside and out.
But we also knew we’d need help.
Enter the CU Boulder Masters of the Environment (MENV) program — a crew of smart, motivated graduate students who teamed up with us to take on the assessment, organize our documentation, and hold us accountable to the process.
These students helped us tackle everything from assessing our climate impact and setting up internal policies to mapping out our giving in Steamboat and beyond. They were instrumental in getting us past the finish line — and in making sure we did it right.

What surprised us most?
How much we were already doing — and how much more we could do.
Turns out, we had a strong foundation: sustainable materials, a community-centered business model, and a team culture that cares deeply about people and place. But becoming a B Corp forced us to measure that impact. To turn gut instincts into formal policies. To connect the dots between our values and our operations.
And yeah — it was a lot of work. There were moments when we weren’t sure we’d make it. But we kept going, because the end goal wasn’t a certification. It was alignment.

Why it matters
This badge isn’t about bragging rights. It’s about responsibility.
B Corp status holds us accountable — and gives us a roadmap for how we keep growing the right way. It means we’re thinking beyond profits and into the long game: for kids, for the environment, for the next generation of outdoor explorers.
What’s next?
Now that we’re certified, we’re not slowing down.
We’re committed to improving our score, deepening our impact, and continuing to build a business that reflects the world we want to see — one muddy adventure, mended jacket, and chair(lift) snack at a time.

Thank you.
To the CU MENV students (Josh, Sabrina, Conner, Anastasia and Emma) and teacher (Mara) who brought their brains and big hearts to this journey.
To our team, who rolled up their sleeves and made it happen.
To our community — you — who remind us every day why this matters.
We’re so excited to be part of the B Corp community. But more than that, we’re grateful to be building something that’s good to its core.
Let’s keep loving outside — and leaving it better — together.
